“Rehabilitation gets our patients back to the people and things that they love. Their goals might not seem big – to hold their grandson, to make a cup of tea, to go to the loo on their own, to say ‘I love you’ - but they are mountains to climb if you can’t move your arms or legs or have lost the power of speech. Rehabilitation gives people back the lives they have lost” - Kate Tantam, Specialist Rehabilitation Nurse & Founder of #RehabLegend
What is rehabilitation?
Rehab aims to restore as much of a person’s lost ability as possible, as well as restore a sense of self. This medical specialism is carried out by highly-skilled dedicated teams with a tailor-made, person centered plans according to needs. Injuries or medical conditions that affect your ability to function include conditions like brain or spinal injuries, heart attacks, strokes, limb amputation, cancer and diseases like Covid.
Hard to imagine not being able to access rehab support for any of these life-limiting conditions. And yet there are parts of the UK where many can’t access this basic right or have much less than they need.
MEET OUR REHAB LEGENDS
The people who understand the power of rehab best, are the people who’ve been able to access it. To show what it takes to get back to being able to move, we captured these RehabLegends’ stories, alongside the moment they take their first steps.
